GAUGE: 19 sc + 16 rows = 4 inches [10 cm]. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

PLACEMAT
With A, ch 49. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 48 sts. Work 4 more rows sc (5 total). Fasten off A.

[With RS facing, join B in first st at right edge of work. Work 5 rows sc over 48 sts with B. Fasten off B. With RS facing, join A in first st at right edge of work. Work 5 rows sc over 48 sts with A. Fasten off A.] 6 times.

EDGING
Rnd 1
With RS facing, join C in first st at right edge of work. Work 3 sc in first st, sc in each st across row to last st, 3 sc in last st; turn to side, sc evenly spaced in row-end sts across long edge; 3 sc in first ch of foundation ch, sc in each ch of foundation ch to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; sc evenly spaced in row-end sts of remaining edge; join with slip st in top of first sc; turn.

Rnds 2-4 Ch 1, sc in each sc around entire edge, working 3 sc in each corner st; join with slip st in first sc; turn.

Fasten off C. Weave in ends.

COASTER

Note Coaster is worked in strips, then edged and sewn together.

STRIP 1

With A, ch 6. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 5 sts. Work 4 more rows sc. Fasten off A. *With RS facing, join C in first sc at right edge, sc across 5 sts; turn. Work 4 more rows sc. Fasten off C**. Work from * to ** with B instead of C. Fasten off.

STRIP 2

Work as for Strip 1 in the following color sequence: C, B, A.

STRIP 3

Work as for Strip 1 in the following color sequence: B, A, C.

EDGING

Rnd 1 With RS facing and C, join yarn at top right corner of Strip 3; work 3 sc in first sc of Strip 3, sc in each of remaining 4 sts; sc in each sc across top of Strip 2; sc in first 4 sc of Strip 1, 3 sc in last sc of Strip 1; turn to side, sc evenly spaced in row-end sts along side of Strip 1 to first ch, 3 sc in first ch of Strip 1; sc in next 4 ch, sc in 5 ch of Strip 2, sc in first 4 ch of Strip 3, 3 sc in last ch; turn to side, sc evenly spaced in row-end sts along remaining side of Strip 3; join with slip st in top of first sc; turn.

Rnd 2 Ch 1, sc in each sc around entire edge, working 3 sc in each corner st; join with slip st in first sc.

Fasten off C.

Sew Strips together between top and bottom edgings. Weave in ends.
